Description

The University of the Basque Country, a leader in the Basque university system, is offering you the chance to take part in the engaging course "Basque Culture International Summer School". This course, taught by internationally prestigious instructors, offers a unique academic opportunity which will allow you to get to know Basque society first-hand while you study its language and its customs. The objectives of the course are:

  • to reflect on Basque culture and identity and its particularities (whether historical, symbolic, and so forth);
  • to become familiar with the latest academic research regarding the different fields that comprise it, such as language and literature, anthropology, history, economics, etc.;
  • to acquire a working knowledge of the Basque language that will allow you to communicate in everyday activities;
  • to learn about Basque culture and geography, through short trips to the surroundings and fun activities.

Objectifs

To learn about Basque culture and identity under the guidance of prestigious international experts in fields like literature, linguistics, history, sociology, anthropology, economics and science.

To learn about Basque culture and identity both through fun immersion (visits to the surroundings, practical seminars, and so on) and Basque language classes, prioritising a practical and cultural focus.

Marta Kopinska

UPV/EHU

Marta Kopinska is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English and German Studies and Translation and Interpreting at the UPV/EHU. She holds a BA in Ethnolinguistics from Adam Mickiewicz University of Poznan (AMU, Poland) and an MA and PhD in Language Acquisition in Multilingual Settings (LAMS) from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). She is a member of the Language and Speech research group (LASLAB, UPV/EHU) and is currently involved in various research projects dealing with individual differences and the acquisition of English as foreign language. Her research interests include sociolinguistics, EFL and second/third language acquisition, language attitudes and motivation, individual differences in SLA, multilingual education and CLIL, and English as Medium of Instruction (EMI) in tertiary education. She is also a great enthusiast of the Basque language (Euskera).

Es profesor titular de Historia de América en el Departamento de Filología e Historia de la Facultad de Letras (Vitoria Gasteiz), Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea / Universidad del País Vasco, en donde desarrolla como una de sus principales líneas de investigación la historia de la diáspora vasca. Ha sido profesor invitado en varias universidades extranjeras, Basque Visiting Fellow en la Universidad de Oxford, 2008-2009, William Douglass Distinguished Scholar en el Center for Basque Studies, University of Nevada-Reno,2010-2011, Elena Diaz-Verson Amos Eminent Scholar Chair in Latin American Studies en la Columbus State University, 2013-2014 y Magnus Mörner Memorial Professorship in Latin American Studies en la Stockholms Universitet (2016-2017). Es director del posgrado en Diáspora Vasca de la UPV/EHU.
