Description
In 2015, under the direction of Dr. Miren Gabantxo, a summer course was organized at the Bermeo Fisherman's Museum with the title: "Traditional boats: their present situation and their future. Confluences from archeology, anthropology and ethnography". Last year at the UPV/EHU Uda Ikastaroak was organized the course: "Good practices in the scientific restoration of traditional Basque boats and maritime heritage" – Itsasmuseum Bilbao" Following in the footsteps
Following in the wake of that course, we propose the following summer course, which will also serve as a tribute to Johan de Akurio, a native of Bermeo who, 500 years ago, in 1522, circumnavigated the earth as boatswain of J. S. Elkano.
The Ortube is a fishing boat built in 1978 and after several years without use and moored in the outer port of Bermeo, began to sink through a waterway at the height of the waterline. The ship is owned by the Bermeo City Council and on April 22, 2016 the decision was made to take it out of the water to a dry dock car. As of June, a technical project to recover the ship is carried out and the works promoted by the Ortube Volunteers Association. The Ortube is one of the last and most powerful examples of a shipbuilding history with more than 1000 years of experience in the Bay of Biscay. Shipbuilding in a shipyard or riverside carpentry begins in the mountains where the trees are selected to obtain the different woods that will make up the ship.
The maritime and fishing activity, with the use of ships and pinnaces, is included in the Ordinances of the Cofradía de Mareantes de Bermeo in 1353, which means that the fishing and shipbuilding necessary for its development is documented at least from the 11th century and the emblem of Bermeo attests it.
If the history of the Basques in the last millennium has stood out in one way from a global perspective, it is because of their contribution to the generation of a maritime civilization that began to take off in the Bay of Biscay in the 15th century: High-altitude navigation in the 15th century Transatlantic navigation in the 16th century. Transoceanic navigation in the following centuries. Currently, a reference in tuna fishing companies globally.
In 2022 we will also remember J.S. Elkano, Johan de Akurio, a native of Bermeo, one of the sailors who certified the roundness of the earth with accurate calculations as demonstrated in court in 1524.
What is Ortube today?
- A project for the recovery and defense of the heritage of the wooden riverbank shipyards, for the implementation and transmission of maritime civilization and by extension similarity to the entire Basque coast
- A project that from its beginning contains a dimension of educational transfer and civic community action. The Association's website explains in detail the experience accumulated in these 5 years. (www.ortube.eus). But as it grows, it manifests itself as an educational project to spread maritime civilization.
The accumulated experience includes the following values:
- Process of recovery and restoration by community initiative in which a conservationist heritage perspective of what wood construction means is defended. The objective is for ORTUBE to become a prototype of wooden construction and of the local industry that manufactures the propulsion engines made in Bermeo in the 1970s.
- It is an example of learning for the defense of wooden shore shipyards and the wood construction process. In this phase of reform and restoration, Ortube is open and can be visited in its shipyard. For this reason, it is a moment of dissemination of the work carried out to date and with the Ortube it is explained in a professional manner, both to visitors to the Arrantzaleen Museoa and to those who are interested in riverbank shipyards and the construction of wooden boats.
It is also about explaining the sustainability of inshore fishing with this type of vessel, which is linked to the Sustainable Development Goals.
Objectives
Transfer and dissemination of the restoration experience of an iconic and emblematic wooden fishing vessel from the second half of the 20th century, entirely built in Bermeo, which sailed from Ireland to Dakar.
Knowledge and dissemination of the technological experience of the shipbuilding of wooden boats accumulated over centuries in riverside shipyards. Knowledge about the ways of life of the fishermen in the second half of the 20th century.
Assessment of the altruistic community experience promoted by an association of volunteers with an altruistic purpose such as the recovery of a wooden fishing boat.
Protection and enhancement of the heritage contained in wooden boats.
Defense and dissemination of the sustainable development goals, 2030 UN, showing and defending inshore artisanal fishing.

Capitán de la Marina Mercante (1984), Técnico en Pesca y Transporte Marítimo (2003), Jefe de Terminal en la terminal de contenedores Noatum S A del Puerto de Bilbao desde 2002 hasta su jubilación en 2018. Diploma de Especialización en Documentación y Gestión del Patrimonio Histórico, Archivos, Museos y Bibliotecas (2005). Investigador y divulgador marítimo-pesquero es autor de diversas publicaciones y trabajos de investigación, participando e impartiendo cursos y conferencias relacionadas con el mundo marítimo y la recuperación de patrimonio. Miembro de Eusko Ikaskuntza y asesor del Arrantzaleen Museo de Bermeo, el Untzi Museoa de Donostia y el Itsasmuseum de Bilbao.

Juan Andres Diez de Ulzurrun Moreno
Juan Andrés Diez de Ulzurrun (Bilbao 1958) Ingeniero Industrial, especialidad mecánica. Capitán de yate. Patrón Portuario. Piloto privado. Su carrera profesional se desarrolla en el ámbito de la energía. Distribuidora de la antigua Campsa, Gas de Euskadi, Iberdrola, Enagas, Repsol (Petronor). Pertenece a diversos Consejos y órganos de Administración de Compañías ligadas a este ámbito. Desde temprana edad (1971) comenzó a construir pequeñas embarcaciones de madera en el entorno de Sukarrieta. En 2007 creó “Botes Sukarrieta” para la recuperación de embarcaciones de madera en el polígono Lamiaran (Mundaka). Cerca de 30 embarcaciones han sido recuperadas y restauradas. Desde julio del 2016 junto a otros voluntarios emprende la recuperación y restauración del Ortube y en octubre de 2019 cuando se constituyó Ortube Ontziaren Lagun Elkartea fue elegido presidente de la Asociación.
Miren Gabantxo-Uriagereka (Bermeo, 1966). Profesora investigadora permanente de UPV/EHU. Periodista en EITB en los'90. Doctora en Comunicación (UPV/EHU) y Máster en Desarrollo de Internet (Mondragon Unibertsitatea). Concejala en el Ayuntamiento de Bermeo. Directora de Campus de Bizkaia para desarrollar la programación cultural EHUKultura del Vicerrectorado y (2008-2013) Vicedecana para diseñar e implementar el equipamiento tecnológico Medialab para el Plan de Estudios de la Facultad de CC Sociales y de la Comunicación. En 1996 pasó un mes a bordo de dos buques atuneros congeladores en el Océano Índico, cerca de las Islas Seychelles, con el fin de documentar la vida de su padre Hilario -uno de los pioneros en la pesca industrial del atún en el Océno Atlántico y en el Índico-. Fruto de esa experiencia entre pescadores, escribió “Atuneros congeladores, el cambio generacional y la transmisión del conocimiento tradicional” [Zainak. Robert Ugalde Zabala
Doctor en Economía, profesor en la Facultad de Economia y Empresa en el Departamento de Economía financiera.(UPV-EHU). Autor de diversor artículos académicos y del libro Atuneros Congeladores Vascos: un sector de relevancia económica mundial (2014), coautor de los siguientes libros: Modelo de gestión intregral de riesgos para el sector atunero (Fundación Mapfre, 2015). El subsector atunero congelador en cifras: 2011-2017 (Ministerio de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentación, 2019) 2014 Ganador del IV Premio Internacional Julio Sáez de Monografías de Investigación en Gerencia de Riesgos
Jesus Urkidi Garcia
Economista. Jubilado. Socio de Eusko Ikaskuntza. Ha realizado estudios de etnografía e historia marítima centrada fundamentalmente en Bermeo. Formó parte del grupo de investigación local “Uetena” colaborando en la investigación sobre aspectos de la cultura popular de Bermeo. Como miembro de Etniker Bizkaia colaboró en la realización de la encuesta etnográfica en esta localidad para su inclusión en el Atlas Etnográfico de Vasconia. Ha publicado trabajos sobre la pesca tradicional y de túnidos en aguas tropicales. También sobre construcción naval y calas de pesca de los pescadores bermeanos. Asimismo, ha colaborado en publicaciones sobre fotografías antiguas y en un monográfico de las inundaciones de 1983. En la actualidad es miembro de la asociación Ortube Ontziaren Lagun Elkartea, participando en la recuperación del barco.
