The COP27 climate change summit. What's new?

COP27 was held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, from 6th to 12th November 2022. It was the second best-attended summit after the Glasgow event in 2021 and the fifth to be held in Africa, one of the continents most vulnerable to the impact of climate change. DSF brought together a panel of experts to analyse the agreement reached in Egypt, from different points of view.

Crisis must be used as an opportunity for change

We are living through complex times of great uncertainty so it is good to share our doubts and uncertainties. On this journey towards ZERO emissions and sustainability it is very important to know where we are now and where we are heading. These are points that do not need to generate too much controversy, but the problem starts when we start asking ourselves questions such as when and how to undertake this journey.

We have the energy development of the 1990s, whatever we do now is what will be operational in 2050

In the summer of 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, the EU set out a strategy for the use of hydrogen in a climate-clean and emission-free Europe by 2050, making it one of the key vectors. The goals set were 6 GW installed by 2024, 40 by 2030 and by 2050 to move from 2% to 14-15% of the EU's energy use. A minimum investment of 180,000 million euros is considered, which could reach up to 470,000 million Euros.

The green areas are not a lawn full of flowers

Rufino Hernández, director of the European Congress on Energy Efficiency and Sustainability EESAP12-CICAS, prefers to speak of waves in the plural instead of focusing on the challenges posed by the wave of rehabilitation in which we are currently. With the money that will come from the European Next Generation, many things will be done, but then there will be an impasse and a new wave will come, because "each generation is different and wants different things." Now we set the goal of climate neutrality for cities for 2050 but as the years go by, new goals will be set, even before that date.
