Julio Díaz: 'Being poor is the biggest killer in heat waves'

The heat waves recorded in recent years have raised the issue of the pressing need to adapt to the new environmental conditions imposed by climate change. High temperatures particularly impact people who are vulnerable due to their age, those with pre-existing conditions or, in the case of heatstroke, people who work outside at the hottest time of the day. Heat waves thus lead to excess deaths and an increase in hospital admissions.

Connecting health and the environment

Three decades of scientific reports on climate change and the biodiversity crisis have not been enough to change the dominant social structure and economic model in the world significantly. Only a realisation of the link that exists between people's health and the health of ecosystems can bring about change to resolve the environmental crisis. On this premise Fernando Valladares, doctor of biology, research fellow at CSIC and associate lecturer at the Rey Juan Carlos university, gave a talk at the Donostia Sustainability Forum about the changes necessary to cope with climate change.

Effects of environmental exposures on human health

Environmental pollution, responsible for 25% of the diseases we suffer, is a problem that is and will be if serious action is not taken on climate change. "We have improved in water quality or waste management, but the planet is not exactly managed in a sustainable way. It makes no sense if we eat fish from the Pacific or wear pants made in China. These are ways of consuming that generate environmental alterations that have a direct impact on health". This was stated by the director of the course "Tell me where you live and I will tell you what you are exposed to.
