The workshop will focus on exciting discoveries in Atomic-scale Electronics, Photonics, and Quantum Information Science. Quantum materials offer dramatically new approaches for electronics and photonics, but their characteristics, and the techniques to make devices and interconnected systems are largely unknown. The Frontiers in Quantum Materials and Devices workshops address this challenge by bringing together experts in materials growth and characterization, device fabrication and testing, and theoretical modeling.

Molecular ecology comprises a wide diversity of genetic-based methodological and technical approaches to address ecological and evolutionary questions. This course will focus on general concepts, current techniques and key aspects for the experimental design of molecular studies applied to animal ecology using bats as model species. Particularly, the course will go into detail about population genomics, DNA metabarcoding for diet studies and shotgun metagenomics applied to gut microbiota.

Topology and lattice symmetries play a key role in determining matter states and their associated internal order. These so-called topological states of matters are of fundamental interest, since they entail exotic electronic behaviors. The study and prediction of materials with novel topological properties has become a vibrant field of research over the past few years. The 2017 school includes a session explaining practically how to perform a numerical quantum transport calculation of topological systems with KWANT.
