Since the implementation of the Bologna process, universities have gained flexibility regarding their scope to offer degrees, not needing to stick to a closed or governmentally pre-arranged catalogue. Moreover, institutional accreditation allows for an integrated teaching activity evaluation of the centres and their internal quality system leading to a modification and improvement of the managerial mechanisms, outcome analysis and decision-making processes in alignment to defined strategies.

The present course will analyse these mechanisms and they are evaluated by external Quality Assurance Agencies. Over fifteen years after the kick off the accreditation processes, it is now time to evaluate the results of their activities and impact in university.

Strengths and weaknesses of the system will be identified, drawing to proposals that intend to optimise the results of the quality enhancement experienced by the universities. To reach these goals, different stakeholders of our social-economical environment will be taken into consideration, together with their European counterparts, in an attempt to execute a comparative analysis and discuss the present and future role of Quality Assurance Agencies in a European context.

Evaluation efficiency will also be discussed with the purpose of minimising possible fraud.

Objectives

The main objective of the course is analysis and discussion on the quality of the centres and university degrees and their alignment to EHEA, and more specifically, assess the role of the Quality Assurance Agencies.

Identify weaknesses and strengths of the present system, and generate proposals for its improvement.

Analyse the role and impact of the Quality Assurance Agencies in Basque, Spanish, and European universities.

Get to know local and international experiences on the impact of the Quality Assurance Agencies on the improvement of universities.

Get to know and discuss the approaches of the different stakeholders, and the participants of the course.

Reflect on the future of university education and the role of the Quality Assurance Agencies.
